Frequently Asked Questions and Tips for a Smooth Photo Session

What do I need to know about my maternity and newborn sessions?

Maternity sessions should take place when you are visibly pregnant but not to the point of uncomfortable, so usually around 32-34 weeks.

Newborns are best photographed between 5-10 days old.  Your session should be scheduled while you are pregnant and we can adjust depending on when your baby arrives.  Newborn sessions can take up to 3 hours.  It is best for the baby to have a full belly when I arrive so he/she is nice and sleepy and we can begin shooting right away.  Keep the baby in a sleeper, nothing that has to be pulled over the head to be taken off.  I use a space heater to keep the area warm while the baby is naked, so dress accordingly! I recommend solid, neutral clothes for mom and dad.

What about our family session?

The best time to shoot is in the 2 hours before sunset or early in the morning.  Please keep in mind your child's nap time.  We want happy kids, so if morning works better with your schedule please let me know!  Family sessions usually take around an hour.  I appreciate how difficult it can be to get children ready for photo sessions, but I do ask that you make your best effort to be ready to begin shooting at the time of your session.

What if my child has "Stranger Danger?"

This is one of the many benefits of custom photography.  I have had countless parents tell me that they will never again visit one of those studios in the mall.  I used to work at one, and I get it!  There is no way you can throw your two year old in a totally unfamiliar environment with a strange lady holding a big camera in front of her face and expect them to sit still and smile, all within 15 minutes.  Having a custom photographer come to your home or a neutral, familiar place such as a park and allowing time for your child to warm up and feel comfortable is SO much easier on everyone!  Trust me, your two or three year old is not the only difficult child I have ever photographed.  And my clients are always pleasantly surprised at the results I am able to get :)

"The pictures turned out really wonderful!  I have to say I am surprised- and it has nothing to do with your ability, everything to do with the very active moving targets you were working with!  The fact that you captured us looking good is a true miracle and testament to your talent.  Well done :)"

What should we wear?

Choose outfits that coordinate, but don't match.  Treat everyone's clothing as if it were all one outfit.  You can start by picking an inspiration piece- a scarf, a plaid shirt, etc.- and then select the rest of the clothing to compliment that piece.  Try to stick to 3 or 4 colors.  Add some texture with layers, ruffles, knits, embellishments, etc.  Please avoid neon colors and clothing with logos on them.  Make sure you are comfortable!  And don't forget your shoes, they will show!

When is my payment due?

The session fee is due upon booking in order to reserve your date and can be paid by check or credit card.

What if I need to cancel?

If you need to cancel due to illness, your session fee can be applied to a session rescheduled within 6 months.  Otherwise, your session fee will be forfeited.  Please provide me with as much notice as possible.  No need to reschedule due to minor skin imperfections as these can be taken care of in post processing.

What if the weather is bad?

From time to time we will need to reschedule due to rain and/or lack of natural light.  I will do my best to reschedule with you as soon as possible as our schedules allow.  We can still shoot in the cold, wind, and light sprinkles.

Can I take pictures at the session?

Sorry, but no.  It is distracting to both me and your children.  I want you to just relax and enjoy your photo session!  I am usually able to post a sneak peek within a couple days, and I promise it will be worth waiting for.  I like to avoid the awkwardness of asking you to put your phone or camera away, so please don't make me ;)

We had our session, what's next?

With your permission, I will post a sneak peek on Facebook within a day or two.  Within two weeks, I will come to your house for your ordering session where you can view the photos and I will help you design your custom order.
